As much of the country suffers under sweltering heat this summer, people are searching for ways to stay cool. Air conditioning offers an escape from the heat, but many people prefer not to be cooped up inside all day. Here are some fun activities that residents and visitors to Scottsboro might want to try to beat the heat.

The Scottsboro Recreation Complex, known as Rec*Com, has an indoor pool. Patrons can enjoy a swim in any kind of weather. The pool is open Monday-Thursday from 7am-9pm, Friday from 7:30-6pm, Saturday from 10am-6pm, and Sunday from 1-5pm. Daily pool admission is a very reasonable $2 per person. Locker rooms with showers facilities are available.

Outside at Rec*Com is Scottsboro s brand new Splash Park, which opened in June 2011. This is a great place for the kids to get wet. They will love running through the foam geyser, tall tulip spray, slide pad, and various spray jets while dodging the water being dumped from the tumble buckets. The Splash Park is open Monday-Saturday from 10am-7pm and Sunday from 1-5pm. Admission is free. The Recreation Complex and Splash Park are located at 701 South Houston Street.

Another place to cool off is at Goose Pond Colony. The municipally owned facility is located at 417 Ed Hembree Drive on Lake Guntersville. Visitors may pay a daily admission fee to swim in the park s Olympic size swimming pool. Lifeguards are on duty and a bathhouse facility is available. Goose Pond Colony also has a beach and swimming area on the lake. For those who would like to cool off out on the water, the marina rents pontoon boats for the day. New for the summer of 2011 are the paddle board rentals. Another place to go swimming on Lake Guntersville is the Jackson County Park at 2302 County Park Road. A swimming pier is available, and there is no fee to use the park.

Still another way to stay cool is to go underground. Take a short drive to Cathedral Caverns State Park, located twenty miles southwest of Scottsboro near Woodville. The temperature inside the caverns is a refreshing 60 degrees all year round. Visitors may take a guided tour through the caverns to see Big Rock Canyon, the Frozen Waterfall, a stalagmite forest, and the Mystic River. Guided tours are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-11 years. The last tour of the day begins at 4pm. The day use areas of the park are open from 7am to sunset.
