There has been a lot of talk about the differences between the Apple Industries iPhone and Research in Motion s blackberry phone. Walk into any office building, take any mode of transit or even walk down a major metropolitan street; you will hear the arguments for either smartphone. This article does not lean either way; instead it tries to define the major features of each and lets you make the decision for yourself. Keep in mind, as with most technology, updates and improvements are a daily occurrence. Once one company comes up with a new handy feature all of the others retaliate with their own. Keeping up with all the advancements is a timely and costly venture. Thus research is always a must, and keeping up to date on new technology will allow you to decide whether or not the new features are a must.

Recently, Apple Industry unveiled its new iphone. It definitely had less marketing fanfare than their previous smartphone 3G back in 2008. This was in part because the new version is less of a new device and more of an update. Apple seems to be trying to keep up with the maturing web-browsing and multi-media capable mobile phones, dubbed smartphones. They are competing with U.S. mainstays such as Nokia, Samsung, and HTC and, in Canada, Palm s pre-phone, and Research in Motion s Blackberrys, as well as Google Inc. s Android operating system. Smartphone sales are definitely on the rise, according to market analyst IDC Canada, Smartphone shipments rose 38 percent, while traditional mobile phones fell 37 percent during the same period last year.

According to the Apple iPhone website, the newer version is 2X faster than the 3G. It also has new features such as internet tethering, which allows the user to connect to their laptops. It has video recording capabilities, as well as a built-in three megapixel camera. It has voice control and a digital compass. It boasts a larger keyboard which can be rotated to landscape mode, and you can now cut, copy and paste text capability between programs.

Conversely, the blackberry smartphone is unlike the iPhone. Almost all of the apps are available outside the app world. They can be browsed, purchased, downloaded and installed via your computer. The big difference being that iPhone requires the use of itunes to browse these apps and with blackberry all that is needed is an internet connection. Many of the apps are available free of charge, that is a big difference.

Blackberry has a standard and free documents to go app which is capable to do basic text edits, in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents. It has simple formatting functions, as well as cut and paste features. Blackberry has a full QWERTY keyboard full time compared to the iphone s small keyboard, which may be difficult to access at times. Blackberry uses themes. Zen themes, which allows a small number of commonly used icons to be on the home screen and reduce clutter. There are also today themes, which can show a number of combinations on the home screen like calendar events, new mail.sms and mms messages. There are also icon themes for a more unified interface. This is designed for the user to customize to his or her liking. You can also move icons around on the blackberry. They re not required to be in a folder and can also be set up on the home screen for easy access.

Whether you are a tried and true Apple enthusiast or PC all the way, you have many options and abilities with both company s smartphones. If there is a feature only one phone has, not to worry, the other will quickly follow suite. Technology is always advancing and so must our knowledge.
